14. The Stain – Sister Mimi (Lunda, Democratic Republic of Congo)
written by Sister Mimi • music created & produced by Andrew Baschyn
Sister Mimi, of Kolwezi in Democratic Republic of Congo, began writing poetry, in French, at twelve years of age, eventually learning to write in English. She began performing while living in Paris in mid-80s and exploring the influence of hip-hop on the culture there. She arrived in the Twin Cities in 1994 and has been actively involved in the artistic community as a poet, singer, and musician; and as a co-founder the Initiation, a platform for Afrikan music, culture, and poetry to pass on messages and pay respect to the Afrikan tradition. The art of the spoken word comes through her Afrikan heritage and the oral tradition, which was passed to her by the elders of the village.
