3. Ngam Ngui (To Grieve) – Bach Hac (Vietnamese)
written by Vietnamese poet Huy Can <pronounced Hwee Kun>

Bach Hac <pronounced Bek Hak> is a singer and recitationist specializing in Vietnamese traditional recitation forms. This a centuries-old form of poetic recitation that has both folk and courtly origins, and is highly popular in Vietnamese culture. Bach Hac arrived in the U.S. in 1981, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1987. She currently resides in Apple Valley, is a business woman, and a mother of three children.

Poet Huy Can was born in 1919 in Yen-Phu <pronounced E'an Foo>, Vietnam. This poem emerges in the pre-independence era in the 1930’s rife with unrest against French colonial domination. This period saw the rise of personal poetry depicting the inner world of individuals in an era of social upheaval, different from the previous era of class-distinguishing poetry of court mandarins. This is also an era of increasing political poetry. Can's famous poem reflects on a partnership of many years, and condenses into the image of one lover fanning the other to sleep, <and> the journey of two people through life's struggle and beauty. Notice the imagery of nature (leaves of sorrow, spider weaves a web of ennui, dream birds, sounds of dense as weeping willows, seasons of sorrows) throughout this short poem evoking the Taoist ideal of the harmony of cycles, and the emphasis on the dream mode, in which the outer reality and the inner reality merge. ––Luu Pham
