Nirmala has represented India in the "Festivals of India" at concerts in Switzerland, England and the USA. She has done several radio broadcasts and television appearances. The BBC has a concert recording of hers as part of their "Concert Library of World Artists". A winner of several awards, she has released a cassette with poet Robert Bly called "The Songs of Mirabai".
The literature of the Tamils, a people numbering about fifty million who inhabit the southernmost part of India, goes back nearly 2000 years. Tamil is the oldest of the Dravidian languages. The poems read come from one of the earliest surviving texts of classical Tamil poetry, The Kuruntokai, an anthology of love poems probably recorded during the first three centuries A.D. These poems were rediscovered in the Eighteenth Century written on palm leaves that were crumbling. The translations here were rendered by A. K. Ramanujan. Nirmala Rajasekar sings one of the poems in the original Tamil. She also provides the soundscape––her original composition. ––Meena Natarajan
