John Wright is a professor of Afro-American & African Studies and English at the University of Minnesota. He is also the faculty scholar for the nationally acclaimed Archie Givens, Sr. Collection of African American Literature & Life, and its touring exhibition on the Harlem Renaissance, A Stronger Soul Within a Finer Frame. In addition to his teaching and research, he performs dramatic readings with musical accompaniment, and together with jazz scholar and clinician, Prof. Ron McCurdy, headlined revivals of Langston Hughes' Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz at at the Frederick Weisman Art Museum in 1994 and at the Walker Art Center, in concert with Imamu Amiri Baraka in 1996. He and Prof. McCurdy collaborated with John Faddis and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band in the production of Ask Your Mama that opened the fall 2000 jazz concert series at Carnegie Hall.
